Summary / Abstract :
As is the case with other instances of genocide, there were minor ina ccuracies in the refugee testimony, and some of the accounts of life and death under Khmer Rouge rule were utilized for partisan p olitical purposes. On the other hand, the early refugee accounts were overwhelmingly corroborated by the much more voluminous first-person testimony available after 1979. After Cambodia was reopened t o journalists and scholars and the secret extermination facilities uncovered, it became apparent that there were aspects of Khmer Rouge rule that were even worse than the early refugee accounts had in dicated.
