China was trying to persuade the Cambodian government to wage only one border battle and that it should improve its relations with Thailand. China arranged a meeting between the Cambodian Foreign Mini ster Ieng Sary and the former Thai Foreign Minister General Chatichai Choonhavan, who recently made an urgent visit to Beijing. But Chatichai told the press that he visitedChina as president of the Th ai-Chinese Friendship Association. Such an attempt came after Ieng Sary had postponed his official visit to Thailand scheduled for April 1978, while the border fighting between Thai and Cambodian forc es was still going on.
