Summary / Abstract :

The genocidal murders of the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 are documented. The extreme measures taken to transform Cambodia into a "purely agricultural society" is understood in terms o f (1)prior urban-based destruction of the countryside; (2)desire to recapture the ancient Khmer empire; (3)ancient traditions of torture and cruelty; (4)cruse interpretation of Maoist doctrines; (5)mi santhropy among the regime"s leaders; (6)fear of rebellion by factions of the Communist Party.
