This article summarizes Lifton's work on genocidal killing and applies his emerging theoretical model to the Cambodian genocide, in which as many as 3,000,000 Cambodians were killed by the communist K hmer Rouge government of their own country between 1975 and 1978. Markusen finds that Lifton's model - which features a sequence from psychohistorical dislocation (severe social and cultural disruptio n)to totalistic ideological response to violent victimization (of a group alleged to be responsible for the collective trauma)- is consistent with events before and during the Cambodian genocide. (Eri c Markusen).
