Summary / Abstract :
|
This thesis, based on participant observations, interviews with Americans and Cambodians, and six life histories of Cambodian refugees, documents the refugees' lives in their homeland, the effects of the Khmer Rouge holocaust on them and their families, their flight from Cambodia, and their adjustments in the United States. Perspectives used are both American and Cambodian. American service provid ers and teachers typically emphasize refugee training for economic self-sufficiency and assimilation to mainstream American values. Cambodian views of successful adjustment emphasize cooperation, nona ggression, psychological fulfillment, and jobs that emphasize social service. Cambodian needs for adjustment often are not met by American designed programswhile American expectations for refugee adju stment often are not met by Cambodians. What is needed are programs that consider refugee needs while providing them with necessary skills for survival in America. This thesis provides examples of, an d recommendations on, how to do this.
