Bangkok: the pall of smoke that hung over Phnom Penh as the city was shelled and rocketed into submission by the Khmer Rouge forces has been replaced by what is, in many people's mind, a sinister silence. The communist led insurgents took control of the Cambodian capital, in the name of the Royal Government of National Union of Cambodia (GRUNK), on April 17. An almost complete news blackout was impressed on the city following the good fellowship between conqueror and vanquished that reigned for the first few hours after the city's surrender.
