Summary / Abstract :
|
Phnom Penh: Marshal Lon Nol has settled down was the Khmer Republic's first elected president, but the mood of his people is unlikely to give him any satisfaction. Two years of conflict have sapped much of Cambodia's will to fight. One of Phnom Penh's most respected dailies, Khmer Ekareach, commented a week after the presedential election that the Marshal's Shaky mandate might "In some way be his last." A few days later a western dipliomat expressed the opinion that the Lon Nol government realises that the war might not be winnable." This attitude marks a sharp change from the early days of the war when Phnom Penh's backers used to speak in terms of the communist being chased out of the country within a few months.
