Summary / Abstract :
In the end if came down to a haunting symbol: a folded American flag wrapped inside a plastic bag carried under the arm of a departing US ambassador. John Gunther Dean, American envoy to Cambodia during its slow strangulation by communist forces, struck the embassy's colors last week and was evacuated from Phnom Penh by marine helicopter-along with 81 other American and an assortment of Cambodian officials. Nearby in South Vietnam, the siege of Saigon was under way, and the Pentagon hastened work on an evacuation plan that would extricate the far larger cortingent of Americans and loyal South Vietnamese from that country.
