Summary / Abstract :

The fifth non-aligned summit conference in colombo. The draft political statement of the conference discussed the issue of the Southeast Asia as a zone of peace, neutrality and independence as proposed by the ASEAN group. This issue aroused wide interest among all the delegations attending the conference. To avaid opposition from other delegations, the Malaysian delegation asked for an amendment and proposed a new resolution deleting the word "ASEAN" from the draft statement. At the same time, the Laos delegation also proposed its own draft resolution regarding the transformation of Southeast Asia into a zone of genuine peace and independence.
