In spite of the obvious deterioration on the battlefield, there was no way of getting oneself in the mood to leave Phnom Penh. The city looked exactly as ever. It seemed far too solid to fall. It did not look dangerous. On Friday night we went to see the interim president, Saukham Khoy. He left his office in the presidential palace but before going home went round the market in a suburb called Chbar Ampeou. He had made such brief visits most evenings, since becoming president two weeks ago. The idea was to keep in touch with the people.
