Almost exactly eight years ago Khieu Samphan, a left-wing economiss professor and a member of Sihanouk's parliament, told his mother he was going out for breath of fresh air before dinner, walked from the house, and disappeared. He has not been seen since in Phnom Penh but no doubt he soon will be-as commander-in-chief of the Khmer Rouge army and effective leader of the Cambodian communist movement.
