The grave rift in the Lao cabinet reportedly turnd around the question as to whether or not the Lao King, Savang Vatthana, and the crown prince should be executed. The pro-Vietnamese cabinet members-premier Kaysone Phomvihan, Deputy Premier Nouuhak Phomsavan and five others-want to execute them. However, the other group, which comprise Defence Minister Gen Khamouane Boupha, Singkhapo Sikhotchounlamani, Gen Phoun Sipaseut and Phoumi Vongvichit, do not agree. Following a strong argument between the two groups over the matter, the muniters who oppose execution fled and took refuge in the Chinese Embassy in Vietiane. As for Lao President Prince Souphanouvong, he is being detained by soldier loyal to Kaysome Phomvihan.
