The confusing, pulsating battle for Phnom Penh pulsed one step closer to the vital Pochentong airport this week amid rumours, statements and denials that the government was trying to give up. On April 4th, the communist forces launched their first big attack against the southern defences of the city. Using troops released by the fall of Neak Luong last week, they drove to within nine miles of the city centre along the Mekong River to the South-east.
