My favourite truined temple, I note with a reverent genuflexion, is back in the news. Preah Vihear, the crumbling, precariously on the disputed Thai-Cambodian frontier-pavilions of sandstone monuments, with explicit and amorous carvings and mouldering pillars thrown down over the centuries by impetuous and itchy-backsided elephants. The historic complex tills giddily into northern Cambodian space over an inbuilt precipice and is more easily accessible even in peacetime-from Thailand than Cambodia.
