Phnom Penh: Khmer Republic officials took the unusual step at the end of last month of holding a joint press conference involving Prime minister Long Boret and the commander-in-chief of the Khmer Armed Forces (FANK), Lieutenant-General Sostene Fernandes, in an apparent attempt to quash rumours that a major split was developing between the civilian and military top brass. Gen. Fernandes, an energetic and able soldier, has been flexing his muscles with increasing vigour in recent months as he has "tested the water". FANK has acquitted itself reasonably well during 1974 and it is now the civilian administration which unsteady rather than the military hierarchy.
