Summary / Abstract :

In the eyes of some, Marshal Lon Nol has turned the Khmer state into a "dictatorship." Many articles in the American press depicted the Marshal as a cripped despot who rushed to Phnom Penh a seaside holiday to take over supreme power in the Khmer Republic: He grabbed power from Cheng Heng as chief of state, dissolved the constituent assembly, barred a republican constitution on the eve of its completion, declared himself commander in chief of the armed forces and president of the Khmer Republic. The New Khmer Premier, Songoc Thanh, along-time guerilla leader, defended Lon Nol's actions as constitutional and democratic and stated: "All these changes may be a little hard for westerners to understand."
