In this review of Murder of a Gentle land by John Barron and Anthony Paul [review, Sep. 23], Donald Wise mentions (and seems to accept) Barron's and Paul's conjecture that "the origins of some of the more extreme polocies of the Khmer Rouge may jie in the personality of the important ideologue Khieu Samphan" since chronic importence "is the product of profound hostility."
