Phnom Penh: with the Khmer Rouge stranglehold on the Cambodian capital tightening by the hour, the ordinary soldiers in the ranks of the besieged Cambodian Armed Forces (FANK) strode into the limelight. They amazed everybody in the surrounded capital with a display of raw courage which belongs in the realms of the fantastic when one considers that many had not been paid for there months, most were short of food-not to mention ammunition-while others were worrying about the fate of their families. Tactically, they were not fighting well, but they refused to accept defeat.
