Vientiane: Hanoi's willingness to drop the precondition that Chinese troops should withdraw beyond the border recognised by Vietnam has cleared the way for talks. But few expect the talks to resolve the territorial dispute, let alone the deeper political-strategic conflict between the two communist neighbours. At best, the talks due to begin in Hanoi on April 16 could provide a brief pause while China and Vietnam-led Indochina carry on their preparations for a protracted confrontation.
