|
At the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, Russia and China fought a bitter battle over who should represent Cambodia-the Soviet-backed government installedby Vietnam last January, or the fallen dictator Pol Pot. In the end, Pol Pot's delegates won the Assembly seat, even though many countries felt uncomfortable supporting a man whose brutal seizure of power resulted in the slaughter of thousands of Cambodians peasants and led to chaos that prevails in a country devastated by both hopelessness and hunger.
