Vietnam is Thailand's historical enemy and Cambodia has traditionally been the buffer state. Thailand continues to give diplomatic support to the Khmer Rouge. On several occasion Thai army helicoters have picked up Ieng Sary, the deputy premier, from his jungle hideout in the Cardamon mountain range and flown him to Bangkok to enable him to attend international conferences.
