The vast and lonely courtyards of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, from which the ceremonial buildings rise like immobilised ancient battle crath, sees a suitable symbol of the emptines that is at the heart of Kampuchea today. For this is not only a physically devastated society, and one still threatened by famine and war, it is also a society groups have almost entirely lost confidence in themselves, in one another, and in the future.
