Southeast Asia is high on the Soviet list of geopolitical priorities. The region, which encompasses the Indochina peninsula on the Malay archiplago, straddles the Indian and Pacific oceans. It has China on the North, India on the worst and is linked by sea to Japan, Australia and us bases in the Pacific.
