On January 7 , 1979, Vietnamese forces occupied Phnom Penh and brought to an end a regime that rivals in infamy those of hitler, stalin and Idi amin Pol Pot's democratic Kampuchea . The conquerers established the people's republic of kampuchea under Heng Samrin.
