Unless China's leaders are officred with a Nixonian desire to punish Vietnam for the shake of it, the aim of their invasion was to force Vietnamese troops out of Kampuchea. They must have seen those troops as rapidly demolisting any Chances of the return to power of their ally Pol Pot, ousted on 7 January.
