At the beginning of this month, Sihanouk announced that he was willing to return to Cambodian under Heng Samrin. Speaking at a Peking press conference, he said that his country must not be a Vietnamese protectorate but this formulation did not hide the shift in his position, which also opened a new stage in Cambodian polities.
