Thai and Vietnamese forces are fighting out their bloodiest and most protracted confrontation along Thailand's border with Kampuchea. The prize is a series of hilltop a mile or two inside Thai territory at the eastern end of the border and controlling passes that have provided useful infiltration routes for Kampuchea's resistance movements.
