Until a decade ago, Cambodia was a country on the fringe of warfare in Indochina. It was a nation troubled by economic problems, political corruption and internal dissent, but clinging to a shaky neutrality and the traditions of a gentle, artistic and reserved people who hoped against hope that the tragedy unfolding in Vietnam would by pass them.
