Description
This piece of investigative journalism looks into the geopolitical forces that put the Khmer Rouge back onto the table in the run up to UN-supervised "free and fair elections" in the 1990s. Pol Pot's second in command is treated with respect by the United States and its allies, and is addressed as his Excellency. The Khmer Rouge have a palpable presence in the nation, and it is estimated that after the UN arrival in Cambodia, the areas controlled by the Khmer Rouge in the nation have more than doubled. After being allowed to contest elections, the Khmer Rouge have refused to cooperate with UNTAC (United Nations transitional Committee in Cambodia). The role of Britain and China in training allies of Pol Pot is also investigated. Since the making of this film, Pilger states that the Khmer Rouge have given up any pretence of cooperating the UN, or in other words, have taken it upon themselves to disrupt the forthcoming elections. They killed over 100 people in the span of one month including a few UN officials as well.
