Description
In 1984 a few Cambodian refugees get taken in by families in Meeker, Vermont. Among them, Sirik Nheth is the most troublesome, and after being thrown out by the family that first took his in, he is taken in by a second family-- the Hatches. Sirik suffers from severe guilt about having left his mother, sister and brother behind in Cambodia, only so that he could pose as an as an orphan and escape from the refugee camp to come to the United States. When he received a letter from his mother, informing him that his family is alive, he becomes restless to bring bring his family to the United States. However, the diplomatic intricacies from quotas to immigration law make this an uphill battle. The town of Meeker aggress to act as a sponsor for the Nheth family. In the meantime, Sirik's sister is kidnapped by a Thai gangster who has close ties with the Khmer Rouge, and as a result, his mother refuses to leave without her. The Hatches then make a trip down to Thailand and employ a man who rescues the girl from the brothel where she is being forced to work, and the entire Nheth family is reunited with Sirik in Vermont. This film is based upon actual events.
