Defrocking a monk – my older brother In 1978, my older brother, a monk at the Rangieng pagoda, was defrocked at the Phnum Tauch village, Sdechkung Khangtbaung commune, Banteay Meas district. I do not know the identity of the militiamen who disrobed my brother. I only saw those militiamen coming to defrock my brother and to take him away. At this time, the militiamen disrobed the monks, destroyed the pagoda, and took my brother away and forced him to serve as a soldier. I do not know who is responsible for the defrocking and disappearance of my brother. At the time, our neighbors, who witnessed the incident, were Ta Toan (deceased), and Ta Sim, who now lives in Pursat province. |

Forced labor
Between 1975 and 1979, from the moment they [the Khmer Rouge] arrived, they put me to work terribly hard. I began by digging a canal, carrying the dirt, making fertilizer, farming and other assigned tasks. They forced me to work both in and outside of the village, in places such as the Prey Prit village, Um Poeun, Chhrung Kralao, and Kanlang. I started working frp, six a.m. to twelve p.m, at which time [I] received a very small amount of watery rice soup. As soon as I finished eating, I had to go back to work until five p.m. Sometimes, we were also forced to work at night. Specifically, in 1977, even though I was pregnant, I was forced to do hard labor up until I gave birth to my child. One would receive an “education if one could not work, or when one become sick. I am not certain why they forced us to work so terribly hard, and gave us such small amount of rice or watery rice soup to eat. I think [people in] upper levels, ranging from the provincial level to the district level, the communal level, and the village level, ordered people to work so terribly hard.
