In 1975, I lived in Chakk Angre [Phnom Penh]. I was evacuated to Koh Thom District of Kandal Province along with my mother, husband, children and other relatives. They called us “imperialist. “Do not betray collectivism. Do not betray Angkar, they told us. At Koh Thom, I was assigned to build dikes, dig canals and carry earth. I informed Angkar that I was not able to carry so much earth. They then accused me of being capitalist and malingering. I worked at Anlung Sla Village of Koh Thom District for six months, after which the Khmer Rouge evacuated my husband, children and me to Preah Vihear Province. My mother and elder brother were executed at Svay Pagoda in Kampong Kantuot Commune, Kampong Kantuot District of Kandal Province. My husband Y, who had been evacuated to Preah Vihear, was later killed by the Khmer Rouge at Chhveang Village during the harvest season between 1976 and 1977. He was slaughtered because he was a former Lon Nol soldier. I don’t know who ordered the execution of my husband. All I know is that the order was from Angkar, the top level of the organization. The Khmer Rouge then started keeping an eye on me, accusing me of being a KGB or CIA agent. They were about to take me away to be executed but luckily, there was a man named Chhun, the Chhveang Commune Chief, who told them, “Keep watching him. Do not kill him yet. After that, the Khmer Rouge transferred me to build dikes and dig canals at O-Rumduol Dike, Phoum Khsang Dike and Phoum Sleng Construction Site. They also separated my children from me. During the rainy season in 1978, the Khmer Rouge took a woman who was about 20 years old and killed her by slashing open her stomach. They removed her gall bladder, which was then given to her mother to eat. Angkar knew that this woman had been stealing manioc to eat, and thus, she was killed. This was the order from the top, Angkar. They told her mother that Angkar had ordered her daughter to be re-educated. The mother’s name was Chantha. Angkar expected us to have a bumper harvest of three to four tons of rice per hectare that season.
